Pike Road School District (PRS) earned an “A” (91) on the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) State Report Card two years in a row. Two of our schools earned an “A” for the first time, and every school scored an “A” or “B”.
Pike Road Schools District: 91 A
Pike Road Elementary School: 90 A
Pike Road Intermediate School: 92 A
Pike Road Jr. High School: 89 B
Pike Road High School: 82 B
The ALSDE uses a variety of data sources to arrive at the scores including academic achievement and growth, graduation rates, college and career readiness, and chronic absenteeism.
Pike Road Elementary School saw the most improvement this year. Along with student growth in academics, points were gained by increasing overall achievement levels and lowering chronic absenteeism, which are typically connected. Principal Jeff Hatfield is excited about the school’s growth, especially, “increasing our grade from 83 to 90 and achieving an ‘A School’ designation. Our teachers pour everything they've got into our children each day, and it's always exciting to see results. We also need to recognize the effort our children put forth. They worked really hard. I'm just pleased for our team and our school district.”
Dr. Bonnie Sullivan, Principal at Pike Road Intermediate School believes their growth comes from “working diligently with determination, confidence, teamwork, and monitoring attendance! Students took the state assessment seriously and worked hard throughout the year, specifically, writing and practicing particular math standards every day. Teachers who read novels and chapter books with their students had an increase in learning through writing, reading, and reflecting.”
Pike Road Junior High School also achieved a higher score compared to last year, falling just one point short of earning an “A”. Principal Christy Wright celebrates the advancements made, and points out the areas where they are already working to continue the progress. “We want to increase academic achievement by consistently employing impactful teaching strategies, elevating academic rigor, fostering active learner engagement, and promoting a sense of ownership in the learning process.” PRJHS is already making strides towards these goals by using the A+ College Ready Curriculum in all core subjects, offering honors courses, and introducing PRJHS Patriot Time classes. These classes help students focus on their specific areas of improvement and build the skills they need to succeed in high school.
Pike Road High School earned a “B” for the second year in a row. Mrs. Maness and her team have implemented changes to establish the foundation needed to take the school to the next level. “During the 2022 - 2023 school year, we worked hard to establish solid foundational operating practices that have positively impacted our campus. As we continue to build on our implementation of structure and organization, we are now able to shift our attention to achievement.”
PRHS students earned 122 qualifying Advanced Placement (AP) scores last year, saving Pike Road families more than $200,000 in tuition costs. This year there are more than twelve AP courses offered, allowing more than 250 high school students the opportunity to participate in the program. Additionally, the Career and Technology (CTE) Program has expanded to include more than 5 pathways including a Health Science Track and an Education Track.
Superintendent Dr. Keith Lankford is pleased to see the improvements our schools have made. “I am excited to see the results of the hard work of our students, teachers, staff, and administration. We have assembled an excellent team at Pike Road whose focus and teamwork show up on this report card. Our success is a testament to our community’s desire for a great school system. Pike Road Schools will continue to strive to improve for our students and our community!”
